CarbonNeutral Newcastle

Launched in 2003, CarbonNeutral Newcastle is a city-wide initiative which aims to raise awareness of climate change and reduce the carbon emissions of people and businesses. Its backers include Newcastle City Council, Scottish Power, the Environment Agency and partners from academia, business, the cultural establishment and the community. Objectives include:

• raising the profile of climate change across all audiences
• helping people reduce their carbon emissions
• offering a carbon service to businesses
• raising funds for low-carbon projects
• influencing policy.

A charity, CarbonNeutral North East, was set up to administer grants and funds. Trustees include the Vice Chancellor, Newcastle University, the Bishop of Newcastle and a Councillor.

CarbonNeutral Newcastle is a regular contributor to the media and local events, including appearances on TV, radio and press, lectures and seminars.

Since its launch, CarbonNeutral Newcastle has engaged millions of people through its unique programmes.

Charles Henderson of Climate Futures co-founded and directed CarbonNeutral Newcastle from 2002 - 2008.
